The eastern gateway to the Kimberley. Near Kununurra is Lake Argyle, the largest man-made lake in the southern hemisphere and a magnet for water sports enthusiasts.
About 105 kilometers northwest of Kununurra lies Wyndham. This is the place where 5 rivers flow into the Gulf of Cambridge.
About 80 kilometers outside Kununurra the Gibb River Road begins. This road seems to be becoming my nemesis, but where it failed the previous times due to early rain and very bad roads, this time I really plan to complete the entire route. The Gibb River Road once started as the route along which the cattle were taken to Derby and Wyndham to be transported from there by boat.
A decent excursion on the route is the road to Mitchell Falls and the Mitchell River National Park. It's about 155 miles from the Gibb River Road turnoff and will probably take a whole day to get there (and a day back, of course). Although the falls are more spectacular just at the end of the rainy season, it is most likely still more than worth it during the period that I am there. We shall see.
There are many Gorges along the Gibb River Road that are well worth a visit. I definitely want to visit the Manning River, Bell Creek and Lennard River.
At the end of the Gibb River Road are the national parks of Windjana Gorge and Tunnel Creek. Both parks should not be missing from my list, and Windjana Gorge in particular has made such a lasting impression on me that this will be the third time I visit this park.
